Creative Writing Workshop with Julia Crouch, author of Cuckoo.
Don’t Get it Right: Strategies for pulling Draft Zero out of your brain and onto your hard drive.
Taking its title from Thurber’s famous quote ‘Don’t get it right, get it written’, this workshop is for people who want to write a novel but who either don’t know where to start or who always fail at chapter three. Julia Crouch is a veteran of the fast and dirty Draft Zero – the version of a novel that no one other than the writer should ever see. For her, it’s the only way to write, discovered during an early theatre career devising plays with actors to very tight deadlines. She developed her approach through participating in NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month, which challenged writers to produce a 50,000 word novel in the month of November). She has written all three of her internationally published novels using this method. Julia talks of her own experience of ‘pantsing’ – writing by the seat of your pants – and takes participants through a series of practical exercises to send them away fired up to produce their own ropey first draft. To spare the rest of the world, she also provides pointers on what you have to do before you show it to anyone else.
