The most surprising details of our surroundings contain a host of clues that can help us discover our country’s social, religious and cultural past.  Aspects of the landscape, urban and rural, hold hidden messages which can unlock the stories of Britain’s history.

Take a walk around Stratford with Martin Palmer and decode the town's extraordinary past - then return for tea at the Civic Hall.

Martin Palmer is the co-founder of ARC, The Alliance of Religions and Conservation, with the Duke of Edinburgh.  ARC is an environmental charity which aims to protect as many of the world’s sacred places as possible (www.arcworld.org/projects).  The Sacred Land project is ARC’s most recent and most successful programme, launched in 1997 in partnership with the WWF.  Since then it has been protecting, reviving and restoring sacred sites in Britain and around the world.  It is currently being re-launched worldwide, with his new book, Sacred lands, book being its major manifestation in the UK alongside a string of projects. Martin is also a special advisor to the UN on climate change, the environment and faiths, currently heading up a 2-year-programme.

‘There is much to relish. Full of rich information.’  Melvyn Bragg
