Jodi Picoult heads Autumn Line-up

Thursday 14th June 2018

The Stratford Literary Festival will be hosting a major author as part of its autumn line-up.

Jodi Picoult, the American author of 24 internationally bestselling novels, will be appearing on Sunday 28th October, talking about her new novel and kicking off a short season of events.

She is a writer who is never afraid to confront important issues head on, and Small Great Things, and My Sister’s Keeper, which was made into a major film starring Cameron Diaz, are amongst her best known novels. In her latest, A Spark of Light, she writes about the highly controversial issue of abortion: the right to life versus a woman’s right to choose.

It is set around The Centre for Women’s Reproductive Health, barricaded by demonstrators every day. However, life and death decisions are made horrifyingly real as a lone protester with a gun takes the staff, patients and visitors hostage. A Spark of Light is described as ‘an urgent and enthralling book. Its narrative structure grips from the start, with the action unfolding in reverse, following seven characters whose lives – past, present and future – tangle in a fraught tapestry of pain, terror and beliefs. These are decisions that face millions every day. If there is judgement to be passed, who has the right to pass it?’

Picoult’s writing is internationally acclaimed, ‘[She] writes with unassuming brilliance’ said Stephen King, and the Financial Times reviewed her work saying ‘It is hard to exaggerate how well Picoult writes’

‘We are very excited that Jodi has chosen to include Stratford in a short, exclusive book tour of the UK,’ says Festival Director, Annie Ashworth. ‘She will be a brilliant overture to our Winter Weekend which takes place from 8th to 11th November, and we look forward very much to be in residence again at the ArtsHouse under its new management.’
