Two novelists bring us books exploring rural communities under threat, and explore how setting can be the main character in a piece of fiction. Clare Clark’s Adder Stone is inspired by the true story of the Welsh village flooded in 1963 to create a reservoir to service Liverpool, and explores who we are when we lose the places that define us. In Snow Birds (Roisin Maguire), a longtime resident of an Irish village reluctantly bands together with visiting city dwellers when corporate interests threaten a nearby island colony of rare birds.
