The garden has always been far more than a place to grow things. It is where we work out our relationship with the natural world, and our longings for beauty and order. Join the Shakespeare scholar, former Oxford college Provost, literary critic and cultural historian as he traces the history of the garden from Eden to Versailles, from Capability Brown to New York’s High Line. Drawing on poetry, painting, philosophy, mythology and religion, he'll show us how the garden has inspired our greatest art and consoled us in our darkest hours.
